Orange is Back
I’m sure you’ve already heard but Orange is the new Black (OITNB) is back! With a sneak move season 3 dropped a day earlier even by a few hours by the schedule date that was announced by Netflix. I didn’t find out until I was done watching the NBA Finals were the Cavs lost (Sad Face) it’s only game four and both teams are tied with wins and losses. After tuning out of the last couple seconds of the game I checked Facebook to see that everyone was not in fact running down the 6th with their woes but feverently talking about the early release of OITNB. I watched two episodes before going to bed. I had to make sure that in face Vee the evil heinous bitch villain from last season was in fact dead. What I want to talk is whose backstories were told and what new friendships and relationships I’m shipping and character developments.
One of the things that I really like about OITNB is the backstories for the characters. With season they really didn’t show how most of the ladies ended up in Litchfield but how circumstances in their lives and the environment they grew up in contributed to their personalities and characteristics. I’ll try to talk about all of this without doing to many spoilers.
Let’s start with the most interesting stories.
Doggett or Pennsatucky – Her stories starts out with her as a child and show how her mother’s parenting is defiantly a big impact on how Tucky takes care of herself and her relationship with me in general.
Norma – the quiet one and Red’s sidekick she’s has a very interesting story with a cult and murder.
Leanne – one part of the meth head equivalent of twiddle dee and twiddle dumb. She’s the more intelligent of the two but you see what her current life even in prison is a staunch difference from her upbringing.
Caputo – the almost warden shows that he always rally’s for the underdog and because of that he’s missed out on a lot a great things.
Along with Chang, Big boo, Healy, Black Cindy, Flaca, Bennett, Soso, Watson, Mendoza, Poussey, Dayanara, Nicky
Some of the friendships that developed this season were the best part of the season. Especially when you see how they both learn from each other and grown a little more confident as a person.
Big Boo & Tucky – This two had the start of a budding friendship towards the end of season two. But season 3 has shown that they generally care about each other’s well-being.
Crazy eyes & Taystee – After the death of Vee Taystee helps crazy come to the realization that Vee is not coming back and in turn she also comes to the same realization though she hide it a lot better than Crazy did.
Caputo and Figueroa I'm not to sure about their relationship
I'm a sucker for a good romance and there is always one on OITNB
Red & Healy – I love Red even though she was kind of a douche last season. I love her blunt honesty and Healy I love that he thinks he’s helping but he is an asshole, misogynist and racist but I find him endearing. He doesn’t get mad when Red tells him the truth. He actually goes out of his way to help her.
Poussey & Soso – both of these characters seem to being have struggles but seem to be exactly what the other needs right now.
Crazy Eyes & Maureen – after watching Crazy go gaga over Piper in the first season she was very off putting. Season two after watching her being manipulated by Vee and seeing her backstory she start to soften for her. Season 3 she’s seems a lot more stable and seems to have found a kindred spirt in the newcomer Maureen.
I should also mention Morello and Joey I think she might have found her prince.
My favorite character developments this season the first one is going to have to go to Doggett. I hated her character even though I loved the actress. She’s was such a bigoted idiot. But when you understand where she comes from and her upbringing you find a soft spot for her. She seems to have grown by the end of the season she isn’t spouting hateful insults with anyone that upsets her. She’s recognized that maybe the whole time she is in fact sad and she was using her anger as a defense mechanism. Hopefully next season she embrace race as well since she seems ok with Boo’s sexuality.
The second runner up would be Black Cindy I could not stand this broad the first two seasons but when she found a religion that she could actually embrace without fear of not doing exactly everything the religion calls for she seemed to calm down a little. Her flashback to when she was a child tells a lot of why she always had a love hate relationship with religion. I’m hoping next season she will continue to grow.
Other character developments this season include. Soso, Crazy eyes, Piper, Alex, Norma, Caputo, Leanne.
The break out star is in fact Stella the hot new girl on the cell block. She is stunning like a young angelina jolie. Maybe what Angelina and Brad's younger daughter Vivienne will look like when she grows up. One thing for sure is she's having people question their sexuality left and right.
Have you finished watching the new season? Did you like it? What were you're favorite parts?
